Digital Pain Management Hub

Equalizing Access to Non-opioid Strategies with Online Pain Management Tools

Challenge: Over 25 million adults in the United States suffer from chronic pain. While a range of treatments can help better manage pain, these solutions are often out of reach for many patients because of cost concerns, uncertainty about where to find evidence-based resources, and lack of tools that empower patients to develop personal care strategies based on their own needs and circumstances.

Opportunity: Together with Washington State University (WSU) College of Nursing and Goalistics, LLC, Urbanova led a 6-month planning effort that included over 30 community partners  to envision a strategy for expanding access to pain self management resources. The effort was funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) Civic Innovation Challenge, Stage 1 Planning Grant.

Next Steps: In March 2023, Urbanova and community partners submitted an NSF proposal for a Stage 2 Pilot. The proposed digital pain management hub pilot will be tested in multiple settings including inpatient and outpatient health systems as well as a federally qualified health center (FQHC) and provider of community health worker services. Urbanova will lead the platform development, WSU will conduct research on pilot effectiveness and Goalistics, LLC will provide subject matter expertise on pain management.
